Buildings as a Grid - Unlocking the energy transition for buildings

The presentation will explore how the energy transition creates an opportunity for building owners to manage power far more effectively. It is outlined that buildings can be transformed from sole energy consumers into energy hubs to accelerate decarbonization, boost resilience, reduce energy costs and create new revenue streams. It is then shown how this can work for different building types using specific examples.

Integrating green, regionally generated energy at BIO-FROST Westhof

This lecture will provide insights into LUMENIONs newest project: the installation of a storage system with a capacity of 20 MWh at Germany's largest organic frozen vegetable processing plant. The storage system will absorb power peaks of up to 5 MW from nearby wind energy, store it for up to two days and then provide it as needed for processing 10 tons of frozen vegetables per hour, always ensuring a CO₂-free production. This will save BIO-FROST Westhof approx. 7,500 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

DC multi-source integration using power electronics energy hub for green and highly available power delivery

Distributed renewable energy production, batteries, and hydrogen-based energy storage are key to energy transition. However, their efficient and reliable grid integration remains challenging.  
This presentation will show how research developed in collaboration between Kiel University, Fraunhofer ISIT, and Trinity College Dublin, which are joining forces in a EU-funded innovation project, tackles these issues. It will deal with developments in the direction of fault-tolerant multi-port power converters with embedded energy storage for highly available and efficient multi-source integration.

The contribution of the metal-free flow battery to a circular economy and implications for the industry

More and more companies not only take into consideration what value they create, but also how their own ecological footprint influences the world’s most pressing issue: The climate crisis. Hence, JenaBatteries takes a deeper look into how the energy industry can contribute to a circular economy by introducing a revolutionary, metal-free flow battery for large scale energy storage applications. Starting with sustainable material sourcing, extending the battery life cycle and concluding with battery recycling, the footprint of energy production and storage will be reduced significantly. Furthermore, we take a deeper look into how single decisions in the supply chain can make a huge difference and which parameters are often overlooked. In the end, CEO Philipp Hammans will highlight how specific industries can profit by taking care of their energy consumption footprint.

Decarbonization of minerals industry – The potential of industrial furnace and thermoprocess technology

Fossil free generation of process heat in energy-intensive production processes is essential for the decarbonization of industry. Industrial furnaces are central components in a large number of process chains e.g. in the metals and minerals industry and have a key role in terms of product quality and energy consumption. Therefore, these plants offer great potential for the decarbonization of industry, but also pose technical and economic challenges that will be addressed in the presentation.

More than just hot water – thermal storage for the energy transition

Energy transition requires energy storages. In order to combine power and heat generation, thermal storage offers a solution. High-temperature storage enables the possibility to supply heat on various temperature levels and, additionally, realize electric reconversion through heat engines. At Solar-Institute Jülich, we research various storage technologies, which are introduced to the audience. Furthermore, we present the multiTESS storage concept with heat up to 1000 °C and the realized pilot plant.

Why does battery design matter to energy storage and what can we learn from designing batteries for E-Mobility?

The lecture will explain the importance of battery design to successful e-mobility and energy storage applications. It describes the lithium-ion battery design experience accumulated from the past decade and extend to next generation energy storage. After a theoretical part on battery model, the lecture will focus on how to achieve the battery performance required by those applications and in the end introduce some recent  scientific trials on battery design by artificial intelligence.
